What is the Common App?

The Common App is a website many US colleges use for applications. It lets a student fill out one main application and send it to multiple schools, but each college may still ask for its own questions, fees, or forms.

What is the Common App?

Short answer

Common App is short for the Common Application. It is an online application platform used by many colleges and universities in the United States.

Instead of starting from zero for every school, a student can create one account, enter basic information once, and then apply to multiple colleges through the same system. That can save time, but it does not make every college application exactly the same.

Many schools on the Common App still require extra pieces, such as supplemental essays, a portfolio, or questions about academic interests and activities.

What it means for your family

If your student is applying to several colleges, the Common App can make the process more organized. One place may include personal information, school history, activities, and an essay. Then the student adds colleges and completes each school's remaining requirements.

A few important things to know:

  • One platform does not mean one deadline. Every college may have its own due date.
  • Some schools may offer application plans like Early Action, or EA, and Early Decision, or ED. These plans have different rules and timelines.
  • Students may need recommendation letters, transcripts, and test scores sent separately, depending on the college.
  • Fee waivers may be available for some students.
  • Not every college uses the Common App. Some schools use their own application or another platform.

Families also often hear other terms during this process. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is the main federal financial aid form. The CSS Profile is a separate financial aid form required by some colleges. These are not the same as the Common App.

The Common App is also different from a student's Grade Point Average, or GPA. A GPA is a number that reflects classroom performance over time. The Common App is just one tool used to submit applications.

How an independent counselor helps

An independent educational consultant, or IEC, can help families understand how the Common App fits into the larger college process. That support can be especially helpful for families who are new to the US system or trying to compare many deadlines and requirements.

A counselor can help a student:

  • build a college list that matches the student's goals and interests
  • understand application timelines and what each college requires
  • stay organized with essays, recommendations, and forms
  • learn the difference between the Common App, financial aid forms, and school-specific requirements
  • prepare to make thoughtful decisions without rushing

Counselors coach and guide. Students do their own applications and write their own essays.
